The RICE (rest, ice, compression, and elevation) method is a first-aid treatment that can help relieve pain and swelling from soft tissue injuries, such as sprains, strains, and contusions:
Rest
Avoid using the injured area and stop any activity that could cause further injury. For example, you can use crutches for foot, ankle, knee, or leg injuries, or a splint for hand, wrist, elbow, or arm injuries.
Ice
Apply an ice pack or cold gel pack wrapped in a towel to the injured area for 20 minutes at a time, every 4 hours. Icing helps reduce swelling and pain, and stop bleeding.
Compression
Wrap the injured area with an elastic bandage to reduce swelling and provide support. The bandage should be snug but not painful.
Elevation
Keep the injured area raised above the level of your heart to help drain fluid and reduce swelling. You can use pillows or a chair to elevate the injured area.
You should consult your physician if: The pain is severe, the swelling continues to worsen, and You experience numbness and tingling. You may also visit our Victor urgent care location for orthopedic injuries.
A sports medicine physician is a highly trained healthcare provider who specializes in treating your musculoskeletal system. Your musculoskeletal system includes your bones, muscles, joints, tendons, ligaments and connective tissues. Sports medicine physicians treat injuries caused by active lifestyles for both athletes and non-athletes alike. We make every attempt to manage these injuries conservatively, but some injuries may require surgical intervention for more definitive care.
There are a variety of reasons why you might be experiencing shoulder pain and why that pain feels worse as you're heading to bed.
Three conditions commonly lead to increased shoulder pain at night: bursitis, tendonitis, or rotator cuff tears/injury.
